I’ve read many adoption books and I’ve recommended quite a few as well. Though I know some people say they have a hard time finding time to read, I believe that reading about adoption is a crucial step in becoming prepared to be an adoptive parent.
If you have been intimidated by or had a hard time getting into other books and reading them to completion, I’ve got a great book for you. Adoption Parenting- Creating A Toolbox, Building Connections was edited by JeanMacleod and Sheena Macrae. A sample copy was sent to me a few weeks ago to review.
Because the book is very thick, it took me a few days to get around to opening it. But once I saw the format, the size of the book was no longer intimidating. It is basically a compilation of articles by parents and experts, grouped into every topic that is pertinent to adoptive families.
You can read it straight through, skip around, or look up a subject that you want to know more about. The material is presented clearly and there are lots of additional resources mentioned on every topic for more in-depth study if you are interested.
This is a problem-solving kind of book. If you’re having sleep issues, or school issues, or race issues, or just want to know more about older child adoption, you can look up the topic in the book and read three or four essays from varying viewpoints on each subject. The essay writers are real, approachable and encouraging. People are sharing the stories of their lives, and that is always interesting.
This is an awesome book and would make a great addition to any adopting parent’s library. Buy it for yourself or someone you love.

I do love this book – it has been very helpful as we prepare for our little one and I know I’ll turn to it once he is home. I was really moved by the analogy in the front (if it is the same edition) about getting married, and then waking up with someone new, etc. – it is a very powerful way for us to understand a bit about what a child might feel.
I have read so many books about adoption thoughout the last few months of waiting and I found this one to be easiest to use and well balanced. It covers everything you could ever think of and more.
