Ethiopia: Going to the Rescue of Six Million Orphans

During the Official Launching of a Groundbreaking campaign for Ethiopia's orphans on Thursday, President Girma Wolde-Giorgis, renowned athletes, Major Haile Gebreselasie and Tirunesh Dibaba have called upon the community to take part in the 2006 Dream Campaign to rescue the lives of six million Ethiopian orphans. The president said that the recurrent drought, famine and communicable diseases in various parts of the country result in high under-five mortality rate, ranking Ethiopia 20th.
"30 million children will not live past their fifth birthday by the year 2015 if we fail to be properly committed to implementing programmes of action and global strategies to ensure the prosperity and well-being of deprived children," he said.(Continue reading here)

Ethiopia: Starbucks Urged to Sign Accord With Ethiopia Over Coffee Names

Oxfam America, a deep-pocketed charity, has turned up the heat on Starbucks by taking out full-page newspaper ad Thursday that urges the Seattle-based coffee giant to sign a licensing agreement with Ethiopia.
The controversy centers upon the Ethiopian names Sidamo, Yirgacheffe and Harar, monikers for high-priced gourmet coffee that Starbucks sells. Boston-based Oxfam America said if Starbucks would sign the agreement an additional USD88 million would flow into Ethiopia's coffee industry.(Continue reading here)
