I thought it might be interesting to list some of the things that have amazed and delighted our girls since we met them in Addis.
They've discovered that although businessmen sometimes do fall on escalators, with much briefcase and suitcoat-flapping, it is possible to ride an escalator without trauma. It is best to watch at least 5 steps as they pass to properly gauge speed before jumping on, however.
They have ridden bikes for the first time. They've seen their first acres-wide new-car lot and their first car transport trailer and their first garage door opener. They've learned to play the piano-- half a dozen songs in the case of the 11-year old. They've learned how to work drinking fountains and grocery store conveyer belts and microwaves. They've played with automatic doors- repeatedly in the case of the 9-year old who had to be pried away giggling to allow the old ladies to get into Walmart.
They've discovered that when you call 911 -- and hang up -- you will soon see an American-sized policeman on your front doorstep, complete with gun. (Oh, yes indeedy!) And though you are small, and try to hide behind your big brother, the policeman WILL see you anyway. And then he'll smile just a little before he gets properly stern again.

And after that, if you want to see your parents look alarmed, all you have to do is mischieviously sing out, "911, mom!"
They've learned that mom usually puts good food likes rolls or rice out along with the questionable American stuff but that if something strange accidentally gets on your plate, it is usually possible to pawn it off on a brother, who almost inevitably will like it just fine.
They've noticed to mom's dismay that a spotless room and a made bed is NOT a requirement of living here, despite their fear that first day. Now their room matches all the other bedrooms....which is to say, it looks like a bomb went off. ('Darn', I sigh softly, even as I am glad they are comfortable.)
And as for us, we've discovered that these new girls of ours have tender hearts and quick smiles and keen minds and boisterous laughs and ever-present songs and arms always ready to hug us back.
We are not sure how we have been so blessed.
