Ethiopia: Airline Foundation Donates Books to Orphans

December 18, 2006The Emirate Airline Foundation, a non profit humanitarian organization, on Friday donated 4300 books to the Kidane Mehiret school library in Addis Ababa. The donation which includes eight PCs with email and internet access was aimed at equipping the library with necessary reading material and resources.
Having said the foundation was a means through which Emirates Airlines gets itself involved with communities around the world, Emirates Airlines’ Manager Sudhir Sreedharan said he was glad that the Airline could work with the Kidane Mehiret orphanage in Ethiopia.
This story was particularly interesting to me, as my daughters are both from this orphanage. The full story can be found here.

Ethiopia: Law Faculty Students Debate Ethiopian Revised Family Code

December 18, 2006“Students of the law Faculty of the Addis Ababa University on Saturday held a debate program as to whether or not the Ethiopian revised family code was made to the best interest of children put under guardians and caretakers. The students in two groups debated for and against the revised family code which provides for the children whose parents broke up or died.
“Whereas students in the first group argued that, as the Ethiopian revised family code provides an adequate, workable laws to grant the children’s right fully as enacted by legislative, the second group refuted the claim saying the newly adopted family code lacks detail clarifications and was less applicable as compared to the international conventions, and hence short of ensuring the children’s rights.”
This debate was held to give these law students practice at debating. The winning group was awarded a cup and 1500 birr, while the other group received 900 birr. The full text of the story can be found here.

Ethiopia: Canada Supports Country’s Health, Nutrition Programs Provided Birr 200 Million Through Unicef

November 17, 2006- Canada, through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is providing financial assistance to health and nutrition programs in Ethiopia to ensure access to basic health services, the Canadian embassy in Ethiopia said in a statement.
“Canada, through CIDA, has been a key donor and advocate for health and nutrition programming in Ethiopia since 2002 and has, in April 2006, provided CDN$ 26.5 million through UNICEF for the ongoing measles vaccination, malaria control and vitamin A supplementation programs in Ethiopia,” the statement quoted Canadian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Yves Boulanger as saying during a field visit to Ambo where CIDA funded child immunization against measles and prevention interventions against malaria are underway.
