For those of us with Ethiopian children a new book about Ethiopian heritage and culture is like receiving a gift! As soon as I opened up Tsion’s Life by Stacy Bellward, I knew I had made a good choice in a family Christmas present.

Tsion’s Life (pronounced (SEE yon) can be purchased on Amharickids.com for under $20.00. The story follows an eleven year old girl and how she lives her everyday life, food she eats and activities she participates in. The bright and vivid pictures show an Ethiopia familiar to my kids. It was remarkable how Tsion’s baby pictures look like Mita and Enu’s baby pictures! The book also teaches some Amharic words and discusses celebrations and holidays.

I had to laugh when I read “ She (Tsion) does not like cats or dogs, but she would like to have a pet monkey.” The day we came home from Ethiopia I had to carry Mita in to the house because she was afraid of our small dog. Enu still screams if the cat gets to close to her!

I plan on using this book when I talk to classrooms or groups about Ethiopia because it gives a really great picture of how many Ethiopian’s live. Books like this one educate others on how wonderful Ethiopia is and that not every Ethiopian child is an orphan or is malnourished, as many may perceive. I want to share how rich in culture and tradition it is, as well as breathtakingly beautiful. Tsion’s Life does this wonderfully!

The author’s picture in the back shows her multicultural family, which reminds my kids that there are other families that look like ours. When Mita and Enu look through it and point out things that bring back memories, I get such joy. I treasure every memory they have, as it teaches me more about them and what life was like before they joined our family.
