Sometimes, despite your
best efforts at caution in Addis, you succumb to the dreaded stomach crud. Because of this, it is wise to come to Ethiopia prepared.
When your stomach starts rumbling, your first line of defense should probably be something like Pepto-bismol or Tums. If the stomach upset is mild, this treatment along with very cautious eating and maybe some lemon-lime soda will probably get you back to normal within a few hours.
Imodium?
If you find yourself visiting the bathroom many times, it may be tempting to take some Imodium. However, unless you need to go to the embassy or get on the plane that day, it is probably best if you let the illness run it's course for at least half a day or so. Your body will heal quicker if it is allowed to flush out the bug that is upsetting you. Lie low, take it easy, and drink plenty of fluid--(yes, even if it does seem to be rushing right through you). Save that Imodium for times when you MUST go somewhere and you know a bathroom will not be convenient.

Electrolyte Solutions?
It's a good idea to bring a packet of
oral rehydrating powder to Ethiopia just in case. You can dump it into bottled water and sip it to replace electrolytes your body dumps during illness. I carried a packet of these each time we went. I never needed mine, but was glad to have them just in case.
Antibiotics?
Some families opt to bring a prescription for Cipro to Ethiopia with them. Cipro is a strong, broad-spectrum antibiotic (prescribed for adults only) that can handle many common bugs you might get in Addis. Just last week I heard from someone who was very ill there, and was glad that another traveler had packed some Cipro. There is some debate, however, about the wisdom of self-prescribing antibiotics, and not all doctors will do this for you. Talk with your doctor, and do keep in mind that there ARE good pharmacies in Addis, with good English-speaking pharmacists.
Medical Care?
If you are extremely ill while in Addis, you should probably go to the hospital. Many families have reported being happy with the Hayat Hospital. They have a lab with lots of experience in identifying parasites that commonly cause trouble in Ethiopia. Your adoption agency contact in Ethiopia will also likely have recommendations if you become ill, so be sure to ask for assistance if you need it.
Chances are, with careful eating, good hand-washing, and a little luck, you will stay healthy your whole time in Addis. But it is good to think ahead of time about resources you might need just in case you do have trouble.
