The other day I mentioned some great books for immigrant kids along with a giveaway for someone who shared more ideas. I then promptly forgot about the giveaway (where IS my brain lately??) Anyway, the winner of the book is Mariah, who shared book after book after book on her awesome list! Mariah, email me privately and I’ll send you your book.

I also wanted to share the some more of the books that my family has read and enjoyed over our years of parenting adopted kids. You can locate most of these books on Adoptionshop, Amazon or eBay.

Africa

A Family from Ethiopia by Julia Waterlow — photographs and story about a real family– a real eye -opener

The Village of Round and Square Houses by Ann Grifalconi — African folk tale — houses look Ethiopian to me!
Faraway Home by Jane Kurtz — Beautiful story about an Ethiopian immigrant

Colorful People

Whoever You Are by Mem Fox–a story about the sameness of people all over the earth
Snug in Mama’s Arms by Angela Shelf Medearis- a lyrical bedtime story with beautiful soft pictures featuring a black family
All the Colors of the Earth by Sheila Hamanaka–another story about the beautiful variety of colors of people the world over
Please, Baby, Please by Spike and Tonya Lewis Lee –Fabulously funny story about a black baby

I love my hair! by Natasha Anastasia Tarpley — fun book about the beauty of African American hair. My 3 year old requests this over and over.

Adoption

A Mother for Choco by Keiko Kasza –an adoption story where mom and baby do not ‘match’
Let’s talk about adoption by Fred Rogers –a simple explanatory book about adoption appropriate for early elementary-aged kids
A Blessing From Above by Patti Henderson –a charming adoption story about a kangaroo mama adopting a baby bird
I Promise I’ll Find You by Heather Patricia Ward– a story about the lengths a parent will travel to find her child
The Sea Chest by Toni Buzzeo– a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated mysterious adoption story. One of my favorites. Gorgeous writing.

As always, I’d love to hear more of your recommendations too!!

    Thanks for the list.
How about Little Miss Spider? It’s a bit similar to Choco, in that little spider is searching for her mother and Betty beetle comes alongside her to help and protect as she searches. The search is fruitless and, in the end, she invites little spider to come live with her.
The last line of the book could be taken the wrong way by an adoptee (at least one who wasn’t taken from parents by neglect),I guess, unless they’re grounded in the idea that original mom did love them. You be the judge: “For finding your mother, there’s one certain test. You must look for the creature who loves you the best.”
