A great way to help pass the time when you are waiting for a referral or for your child to come home is to do some reading about Ethiopia. Here are some books that I have read or had recommended to me over the years.
The Sign and the Seal: The Quest for the Lost Ark of the Covenant by Graham Hancock 1993. This is a history of ancient Ethiopia.
Guide to Ethiopia (Bradt Guides), Philip Briggs 1998. I read this book a couple times before each of my two trips to Ethiopia and found it very worthwhile.
Ethiopia: The Roof of Africa (Discovering Our Heritage), Jane Kurtz 1991. This author also has written other children’s stories set in Ethiopia.
A Family from Ethiopia –Families Around the World (Austin, Tex.), Julia Waterlow 1998. This is actually a kids book, but is filled with so many interesting photos and details that any adult interested in Ethiopia would enjoy it too.
Teenage Refugees from Ethiopia Speak Out (In Their Own Voices), Ladena Schnapper (Editor)1997. This is one I have not yet read but it looks interesting.
Exotic Ethiopian Cooking : Sociey, Culture, Hospitality, and Traditions. Revised Extended Edition. 178 Tested Recipes. With Food Composition Tables by Daniel J. Mesfin. This cookbook looked interesting enough that I just now ordered it. I’ll let you know what I think of it after I’ve tried a few recipes.
Notes from the Hyena’s Belly : An Ethiopian Boyhood by Nega Mezlekia. I found this to have interesting insight into Ethiopian culture, though the language was a little rough at times.
What Is Your Name: Book of Eritrean & Ethiopian Names, by Zeray Habte Sillasie 1998 Africa World Press; ISBN: 0865434476 Ethiopian names are fascinating– this book may be difficult to find however.
In Search of King Solomon’s Mines by Tahir Shah, 2003. Here’s another one I haven’t read but would like to.
Lonely Planet Ethiopian Amharic Phrasebook by Tilahun Kebede, Catherine Snow. I brought this book to Ethiopia with me both times and found it very useful.
Do you have any good books about Ethiopia to recommend? I’d love to hear about them!
