I wanted to tell you about two things related to getting books to Ethiopian children. This first bit of news will only be helpful to families in the Maryland and D.C. area. Jane Kurtz, children’s book author and president of Ethiopia Reads, will be speaking in Annapolis, MD this Saturday, November 17th, 2007.

Time: 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Location: Naval Academy Primary School,
74 Greenbury Point Road, Annapolis, MD 21402
RSVP: EthiopiaReads@aol.com

She will present a slide show and speak about Ethiopia, literacy, and her life experiences. Her brother, Christopher Kurtz, will also be speaking as well as telling a story. The siblings grew up in a missionary family and have many stories to tell. Books will be available for purchase and all proceeds will benefit EthiopiaReads. This organization and was featured an October Good Housekeeping magazine article written by Melissa Fay Greene.

I hope that this second part of my news will be of interest to all traveling families. If you are traveling to Ethiopia, Ethiopia Reads challenges you to TAKE ONE BOOK with you to donate to children in Ethiopia. They believe that education is hope and books can change lives.

Books can be delivered to the Shola Children’s Library in Addis Ababa. It is located in Beklo-bet, behind the Dashen Bank off of Debre Zeit road. If you can’t make it to Shola Library, you can donate books to a school in Addis or simply give books to children you see on the streets in Ethiopia.

I have been delighted to have a few Amharic-language books available to my new Ethiopian daughters, thanks to the work done by Ethiopia Reads. I am just as delighted at the thought that children in Ethiopia are benefitting from their work as well. I would encourage you to consider bringing a few books to Ethiopia with you to help them further their efforts.
