A friend told me about a documentary called Angels in the Dust that was just released. It tells the story of a woman from South Africa named Marion Cloete. She is a therapist who left a comfortable life to build Botshabelo, a village and school that cares for over 500 South African children.
The stories of the children are interwoven with stories of orphaned elephants of Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa. In an attempt to reduce the elephant population in the park, many adult elephants have been killed, which has left many orphan elephants scarred and unable to function in a healthy way in elephant society.
In the last few years, elder female elephants have been re-introduced in the hopes of resocializing the young. The experiment is working— and it offers an amazing parallel story to the one told about the human children being “reparented” by Marion at Botshabelo.
Angels in the Dust is scheduled to be shown in many places around the U.S. this fall. Folks who live in the Seattle area may be interested in a special sceeening planned for September 26, 2007. The movie will be shown at the Harvard Exit Theater at 7:00 P.M, located at 807 E. Roy Street in Seattle. There will be a pre-screening reception held at the DAR House at 6:00 P.M. A $15 donation is suggested to benefit:
