Today in the mail I was thrilled to get some samples of Carol’s Daughter hair products. I’ve heard quite a few people describe them as good, and am eager to try them myself. These hair products have no petroleum or mineral oil in them, both of which can build up and not be good for hair. I was sent three items to try out.
Khoret Amen Hair Oil This product smells strong and masculine to me. It almost reminds me of evergreen…or maybe it is the sage I am smelling, I’m not sure. It is not an unpleasant smell, just not feminine. I think I’ll set this aside… maybe someday I’ll have a little boy to use it on, or maybe the smell will grow on me. We’ll see. It is a light-feeling oil that adds lots of shine, and is supposedly excellent for extremely dry hair.
Tui Hair Oil This is a fascinating product because it has bits of actual plants in it, including one called angel-wings. This oil is light and has a luscious fruity smell to it. I will be sniffing my girls’ heads all day after I use this! It also adds lots of nice shine. I gently brushed my daughter’s hair with a boars-bristle hair brush to spread the oil throughout her hair, and it let the brush go through the hair nicely.
Tui Jojoba and Shea Butter Hair Sheen This is another yummy-smelling item. It has a floral/almond smell that is really nice. I like that it comes with a sprayer top. I spritzed oil all over my 2 year olds hair, and brushed it gently in before corn-rowing her hair yesterday. It gave her hair a good level of manageability, and yet I still had enough traction to hold the hair firmly so it did not slip away as I was braiding.
On a side note, I am FINALLY getting better at cornrows! I am getting the hang of adding hair in smoothly and keeping the braids fairly tight, and I can deal with my daughter’s wiggling without letting the whole thing fall apart. And best of all, I am getting faster! It probably helps that she is getting MORE hair, so there is more to hang onto. It is very difficult to braid when you are dealing with tiny bits of hair.
One Carol’s Daughter item that I would like to try is Tui Shea Butter Hair Smoothie. This is a thicker moisturizer in a tub. The bottom two inches of my 4 year old’s hair is pretty damaged (maybe poor nutition early in life?) and I would like something a little richer to rub into those ends to see if they can get a little better conditioned. Anyone every try this one?
For those of you who have used Carol’s Daughter products, which ones do you like?

I love Carol’s daughter products for my son!
We use the Rosemary mint Herbal shampoo, followed by the Hair balm once a week and the Mimosa hair honey every morning.
I also like to clean his hair between shampoos with a their Hair milk conditioner. I actually take the Hair milk (which has a great lemon smell from the lemongrass in it) and I add baking soda and lemon juice to make a foamy mix I put on his wet hair in the tub and rinse. The baking soda and lemon juice make it fizz and help clean build up while the Hair milk conditions. Then we follow with the Hair balm and Mimosa Hair honey as usual.
Thanks for the discription of the Tui hair oil, I think I would like to try it!
I’ve been visiting the Carol’s Daughter website, but feeling kind of lost about what would be appropriate for Hayat’s hair. It’s nice to have some reviews of a few of their products — thanks!
I had the same experience…too many products to choose from!! Deb, is your son’s hair long or short? Would you recommend doing your steps for a child with close cut hair? I am hoping to grow his hair out this summer and do locs…but have been worried about how to manage it.
As for the girl stuff, I have a baby daughter (6 months) that has TONS of hair (about a 4 inch length when curly and uncurled closer to 8 inches…..). It is still very soft and fine and most products for AA hair are too heavy. I have used Mixed Chic’s and like it, but needed some oils or shine products. I remember you saying that your girls hair was softer than most AA type of hair, so if it isn’t too heavy for their hair, I am hopeful!!!
Thanks for the info, I am off to browse the site again…
BTW… I just tried to order from the site and it seems that every product on the kids seciton is out of stock. Maybe this is true, or maybe it is just a glitch with the site, but that I SO FRUSTRATING when you can’t order what you need to…. grrrr.
Reba, Carson’s hair is sort of a medium length. It takes a bit more work but I like the look (I never was a fan of a buzzy type cut). Here is another great site of all natural products we use…
http://oyinhandmade.com
but again I think they are down for maintanence till Jan 21st. As for Carol’s products, check the page that tells of local retailers. Sometimes when the site is out we have been able to get something from a shop in St. Louis that carries the line.
Good luck!
I have used the Tui Hair Smoothie deep conditioner on my daughter and I love it. I use it about once every two weeks – sometimes more if it’s dry out. The best part about it is it doesn’t all rinse out – the oils stay on the hair and keep it moisturized.
But for the thin, broken ends, I think a trim is all that works. We have been trimming Syd’s hair every 6 weeks and it’s finally starting to look really healthy.
I also use the Tui leave in conditioner but I’m out. My daughter used half the bottle to condition her baby brother’s hair. He sure smelled nice, but it was an expensive “let’s play beauty salon” session!
I look forward to your review. I think I will have to try some of their products based on what others have said.
Carol’s Daughter Hair Products can be purchased from Sephora or Sephora.com.
I have been using the Tui leave in conditioner & love it! Our girls’ hair is really short right now, but it is healthy & it is growing really fast (in the month we’ve been home…).
We also use the hair milk in the morning, & it keeps it soft all day. I have the tui hair smoothie, but I haven’t used it yet, because my girls spend most of their bath time under water & I haven’t figured out a way to leave the stuff in for 15 minutes!
Dawn is correct that Sephora carries Carol’s Daughter products, but they do not have them at all their stores. You can order them online, but before you make the trek to you local retail shop, I strongly recommend a phone call to be sure the products are carried at your intended destination. I only say this because my husband and I recently made two unnecessary trips to San Diego (about an hours drive), with the intentions of buying some products for our daughter. Lucky us; it turns out they are only carried at the 3rd store in the San Diego area. Ugh!!!
