I just spent a little time skimming through some of the resources on adoption.com and wanted to share some of the best of what I found. First of all, in the Library, you’ll find all sorts of helpful articles on all different topics. Articles featured this week include:
Pressing close and pushing away: the dance of ambivalence in adoption
Dealing With Unsolicited Comments
Though adoptive parenting is similar to biological parenting in many, many ways, there are some additional things that adoptive parents need to consider. In the adoptionshop.com you’ll find some of the best resources around to prepare for adoptive parenting.
With Eyes Wide Open Workbook and CD- Because internationally adopted kids do not arrive home as newborns, they have all already attempted to become attached to a caregiver while waiting for you. These experiences profoundly affect the way a child is able to attach to you. WITH EYES WIDE OPEN will help you take a child with life-experiences into your heart and your life, to be a part of you forever.
Toddler Adoption: The Weaver’s Craft- In this work a child development expert and mother of child adopted as a toddler provides a guidebook for those considering toddler adoption or those already struggling with its special challenges.
Bringing Up Boys- Dr. James Dobson, America’s foremost authority on the family, provides a road map for raising healthy sons.
The above books are all ones I hav read and found helpful. There are lots of new ones too, some of which look very interesting, including this one which looks like it might be helpful for adopted kids working through loss.
Angry Kids-Dr. Richard Berry draws from his experience as a marriage and family therapist to expose four root causes of anger in children. He shows you how to help your child understand the reasons for his or her anger and then how to teach anger management techniques, so your child can move on from past losses and hurts to live a healthy and balanced life.
These are just some of the resources available on adoption.com. Happy surfing!
