One memorable feature about both of my previous flights to Ethiopia was a long layover in an unfamiliar airport. Since then I've found some helpful websites where travelers share tips about ways to best spend a loathsomely long layover in airports around the world. In this post I'll share some of the features travelers might find helpful about the airport in Frankfurt, Germany.
Activities for Children
One great feature of the airport in Frankfurt is a McDonald's with a kids play area. The food is more expensive than you'll pay in the U.S., and you'll have to change some money to euros to purchase food there. But we found it to be a nice way to allow a toddler to burn off some energy on a long journey.
Another free children's play area, complete with lounge chairs for parents can be found in Terminal 1 between Halls B and C. An art gallery in Terminal 1 on the mezzanine in Hall B might help you pass some time with some lively children. Also in Terminal 1 there's an outdoor Visitors' Terrace. You have to pay a small fee for this, but once outside there are some airplane-related exhibits and also a welcome chance to get a little fresh air.

Food, Showers and Sleeping
Several people mentioned stopping by the Lufthansa connections desk where the Lufthansa staff apparently hands out free snacks and bottled water. Another way to avoid the expensive restaurant prices throughout the terminal is to visit the supermarket that is one floor below ground level.
Also in the general waiting area in Terminal 2, not far from McDonalds, it is possible to pay a few dollars and get a shower. There are towels and private shower stalls.
It can be hard to find a good place to get comfortable enough to doze awhile during a long layover. Many of the benches have armrests between every seat. However, some savvy travelers have found a few spots in the airport where it might just be possible to get a little shuteye.
In Terminal 1, after entering the departures lounge through security, follow signs to the United Airlines Lounge. Travelers report there are quiet corners with full-length sofas.
Another place mentioned as a good resting place is the gate B47 waiting area, in Hall C of Terminal 1, just under the staircase going up to the Reisezentrum area. Yet another traveler mentioned Terminal 2 between transit Areas D and E as a good place to stretch out and rest awhile.
Keep in mind that I have not personally located all these features. If you have personal, more precise knowledge, feel free to add it in comments, below, so that we all can benefit from it.
